Generally peaceful the rhino becomes ferocious when provoked, which is why it became a symbol for the LGBT community in the seventies when they began to fight for equality. Recently Rhinos are at the center of a major conservation effort due to poaching drastically decreasing the wild population into the double digits. Zoos have begun extensive breeding programs hoping to save it from extinction and several farms in Africa have begun creating viable herds hoping to harvest and legally sell their horns thereby removing the stimulus for poaching.
